The lb + inches form is the most "American" input: weight on a
bathroom scale in pounds, height on a driver's licence in inches.
The formula uses the imperial conversion factor
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) / height (in)², which produces
the same number as the metric formula after unit conversion.
How the calculation works
For a 165 lb person who is 69 inches tall (5 ft 9 in), BMI = (703 × 165) ÷ (69 × 69) = 115,995 ÷ 4,761 = 24.4 — the same number as 75 kg ÷ (1.75 m)². The calculator does the conversion for you; you just type in lb and inches.
Switching to other unit forms
You can switch to lb/ft+in, kg/cm or kg+ft/in at any time. Your current values are carried across the swap, so a 165 lb, 69 in reading becomes a 75 kg, 175 cm reading in one click.
